Perseid Meteor Shower Peak (2026)

Meteor shower in the dark sky

Stargazers couldn’t ask for better conditions for the 2026 Perseid meteor shower! This astronomical event is known for fast, bright meteors that stream through the night sky as Earth moves directly through debris left by the Swift–Tuttle comet. The peak of activity from August 12-13 coincides with a new moon this year, so lunar light won’t interfere with the show as it did last year. From a remote area with dark skies (like Sunriver, a designated Dark Sky Place), these settings could deliver up to around 90 meteors per hour.

Perseid Meteor Shower Details

Peak Activity from Aug. 12-13, 2026 | Most active from 12 a.m. – 5 a.m.

The Perseids remain active well beyond mid-August. The entire meteor shower runs from July 14 to September 1 in 2026; you could see meteors soaring any night during this period. Keep watch for exceptionally brilliant meteors, known as fireballs. If you want the best view, you’ll have to stay up late. The Perseid meteor shower is most visible from midnight to dawn.
