Cascade Lakes Scenic Byway

The Cascade Lakes Scenic Byway is a must for those who want to enjoy all the dramatic and gorgeous views of our Cascade Mountains at their own pace.

Start your roadside journey at Southwest Century Drive in Bend where it officially becomes the byway at the southern edge of the city. Begin your ride, and enjoy the 66-mile paved road that leads you west toward Mount Bachelor, turns south near Devils Lake and Elk Lake, and finally comes to an end in the Cascade Range at Highway 58.

Without enjoying any stops, you can drive through the whole byway in about 90 minutes. For those who wish to stop and smell the mountain air, this trip can easily take a full day when including stops for sightseeing, paddling the lakes, and evening enjoying a hike or two.

Byway Operating Season and Winter Closure

Due to heavy snowfall, the Scenic Byway is often closed past Mt. Bachelor from winter to early spring. Exact dates will vary based on the snowpack our area receives year-to-year.

The Scenic Byway normally reopens mid-May to early-June, and will likely close again sometime from mid-October to mid-November. If you are attempting to enjoy the byway near these common opening/closing dates, please be sure to check on the Deschutes County road closure updates, as well as the current road conditions on TripCheck.

Highlights Worth Stopping at on the Cascade Lakes Scenic Byway

There are amazing views and dedicated viewpoints that will spark wonder as you enjoy the highway. Some highlights will likely include:

Viewpoints and Lakes:

  • Mt. Bachelor: Viewpoints, Hiking, Bike Park, Ziplining, and more
  • Sparks Lake: Iconic reservoir of our region with multiple viewpoints of South Sister and the mountain’s reflection on the water (may be tough to access by low-clearing vehicles)
  • Todd Lake: a day-use area with access to the lake for paddling, and offers a gorgeous view of Broken Top. The area is surrounded by alpine meadows that are in bloom with beautiful wildflowers in June and July.
  • Devils Lake: A beautiful turquoise lake that is celebrated for its gorgeous clarity with views of Broken Top and South Sister. Enjoy paddling, fishing, and more.
  • Elk Lake: Enjoy breathtaking views of Mount Bachelor, South Sisters, and Broken Top. This lake features a resort that rents paddleboards and motorboats, as well as a restaurant with a full bar.
  • Lava Lake and Little Lava Lake: Enjoy unique views of lava flows and a pine forest that separates these two sibling lakes. Paddling and fishing are common activities at these lakes.
  • Crane Prairie Reservoir: This local favorite features more gorgeous views of the cascades, as well as boating and fishing activities, and more. Known for their “cranebow” trout (rainbow trout that can grow to 10+ pounds), many anglers visit in hopes of bringing home a trophy fish.

Travel Tips

Mosquitos: If you are traveling the byway in June or July, be prepared for mosquitoes! The many bodies of water along the Cascade Lakes Scenic Byway provide breeding areas for these pesky insects, so please consider bringing insect repellent so you can enjoy the stops and views bite-free.

Sunscreen: Even though a good portion of your trip will likely be enjoyed in your vehicle, the time spent at stops outside in the sun can add up. Be sure to bring and use sunscreen, hats, and other UV protection throughout the day.

Extra Water and Snacks: Sometimes, the gorgeous views and stops are so enticing that your day may go longer than you expect! Always pack extra water and snacks just in case you stay out longer than you anticipated (or in case of emergencies).

Be Courteous of Other Highway Drivers: We understand that you are out to enjoy the sights, and sometimes they come up on you unexpectedly while driving. Please remember to use safe driving practices and utilize designated viewpoints and vehicle pull-off areas to take your photos. This will help keep you and other drivers safe as you enjoy the wonderful views of the Cascades.
