DESCRIPTION:The Geminids meteor shower\, which peaks during mid-December each year\, is considered to be one of the best and most reliable annual meteor showers. During its peak\, 120 Geminid meteors can be seen per hour under perfect conditions. The Geminids are bright and fast meteors and tend to be yellow in color. \nQuick Facts\nActive Dec. 1\, 2025 – Dec. 21\, 2025 (Peak Dec. 12-13)\nObserved Under Dark Skies Expect 40 to 50 meteors per hour\nMeteor Velocity 21 miles (33.8 kilometers) per second\nOrigin: 3200 Phaethon (an asteroid or a possible “rock comet”)\nRadiant: Constellation Gemini \nViewing Tips for the Geminids Meteor Shower\nThe Geminids are best viewed during the night and predawn hours and are visible across the globe due to a nearly 24-hour broad maximum. This shower is considered one of the best opportunities for young viewers since this shower starts around 9 or 10 p.m. To view the Geminids\, find an area well away from the city lights or street lights.
