Central Oregon is the perfect destination year-round for people seeking an outdoor getaway in the high desert. Mountain bikers and avid road cyclists alike stay in Sunriver due to its proximity to the Mt. Bachelor bike park to enjoy scenic bike rides on the community’s 35 miles of paved paths.
Although the region is home to passionate skiers and snowboarders, locals are praying for snowmelt by the time June rolls around. Sunriver is located 180 miles southeast of Portland with an altitude of 4,164 feet. Since the snow melts at lower elevations early in the year, outdoor adventurers can hike and bike as early as March.
With an elevation of 9,065 feet at the summit and record-breaking snowfall on the mountain this year, organizers at Mt. Bachelor bike park are optimistic about the downhill mountain bike park season in 2017. Bike park passes and tickets are already on sale and give pass holders unlimited access to the park all summer long.
Ride and Photograph the Deschutes River Trail
Outside the mountain bike park, cross-country and enduro riders will find plenty of options to keep their hands glued to the handlebars on the single-track trail networks that wind through the Deschutes National Forest. A local favorite for all skill levels is the Deschutes River Trail (DRT).
The DRT extends 15 miles between Sunriver and Bend and runs along the Deschutes River. Riders will pass through Benham and Dillon Falls and Big Eddy rapids. Riders will want to bring a camera in addition to plenty of water and power bars for the ride, as the DRT is one of the most beautiful mountain bike trails in the Sunriver and Bend area.
Mt. Bachelor Bike Park Offers Excitement for the Whole Family
If you are planning to bring children on your next summer vacation in Sunriver, the Sunshine Family Bike Park located at Mt. Bachelor gives young riders access to a loop to ride laps while parents watch from the West Village Deck. The park also offers a skills training area so that riders can build and strengthen their downhills skills before hitting the trails.
The mountain bike park at Mt. Bachelor also offers steep, rough terrain to challenge older downhill riders in training for the Gravity Race Series. Only in its second season, Mt. Bachelor’s Gravity Race Series takes place over the course of one day, beginning at 3:30 PM on August 5th.
